Mrs. Pena's 7th Grade Reading Class

by MaryAnn Pena

April 28, 2009

This past six-weeks, the 7th grade reading class read the novel “Becoming Naomi Leon” by Pam Munoz Ryan. The main character, Naomi, travels to Oaxaca, Mexico in search of her father. While she is there, Naomi learns all about the Oaxacan culture and traditions. During Christmas and Las Posadas making and eating Bunuelos is a tradition of the Hispanic culture. The 7th grade class were able to participate in the making and eating of Bunuelos. Mrs. Mary Fernandez discussed with the students the tradition of making Bunuelos during New Year. She said this tradition has been passed down from generation to generation. Mrs. Fernandez  demonstrated the step by step procedure of making Bunuelos and then the students were able to make their own. The students enjoyed the cooking lesson as well as eating the sweet Bunuelos. A special thank you to Mrs. Fernandez for coming out to Harrold to share with us such a delicious tradition.
